Originally a box office failure and based on the novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, Stanley Kubrick’s picturesque masterpiece traces the rise and fall of eighteenth-century rogue Redmond Barry (Ryan O’Neal), who cheats, connives, spies and seduces his way through Europe and the Seven Years’ War to marry the widowed Lady Lyndon (Marisa Berenson) and assume her dead husband’s aristocratic position.

Kubrick developed a unique lens system that enabled interiors to be shot under candlelight, evoking the domestic atmosphere and tone of the historical period and matching the glorious natural light of his pastoral scenes. This pictorial feast unfolds as a visual counterpoint to the moral decline of Thackeray’s hero.
