A biographical drama, focusing on Charles Darwin's relationship with wife, Emma, following the death of their eldest daughter, Annie, as he struggles to complete On the Origin of Species. How can he reconcile his conflicted Christianity and love for the deeply pious Emma with the faith-shattering implications of evolutionary theory?
The film's creative team is replete with cinematic fitness markers (that’s evolutionary-biology speak): Paul Bettany (A Beautiful Mind) as Darwin; Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, Pollock) as Emma; and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, The Imitation Game) as the biologist Joseph Hooker. Creation is based on the novel Annie’s Box by Randal Keynes Darwin (a great-great-grandson) with a screenplay by John Collee (Tanna, Master and Commander) and is directed by Jon Amiel (The Singing Detective).
