If you want to visit Mona, you’ll need a ticket. Pre-booking is a must. You will also need to check in with the Check in TAS app when you get here.

Please note: Mona is cashless. This includes all tickets, restaurants and bars. Bring your card.

We're not doing cloaking at the moment, due to the pandemic. So please don't bring your bags, backpacks etc (umbrellas and large bags excepted). You'll need to carry anything else you bring.




It's still free to get in to the museum. But there’s a catch. You have to pre-book your trip and pay a deposit; if you show up, you can get your deposit back. We are restricted with numbers so we can’t have people booking and then not showing up. If you do that, the cost is $10 and a lifetime of shame.

The deposit is $10, adults and concession only. No deposit for under 18s (but booking still required).

After your visit, you will receive an email wherein you can choose to have your $10 refunded, or leave it with Daddy Walsh and he’ll pop it straight on the doggies.


For everyone else, museum entry is $30 for adults and $27 concession.

You can book timed museum entry or a wildcard. For wildcards: join the queue on the O when you get here, and we’ll let you know when you can enter the museum.

Under 18s are free, but will still need to book a timed or wildcard ticket.

Our high-speed catamarans sail between Hobart’s Brooke Street Pier and Mona often, and take around twenty-five minutes one way. Please phone Ticket Support if you’d like to make a booking for a passenger under four.

There are 99 steps upon arrival at Mona. The jetty isn’t accessible for mobility aids (wheelchairs, walking frames, scooters) or prams at the moment—we apologise for this and assure you we’re working on it (you’ll find more information about accessibility at Mona below). Posh Pit

$58 one way or return, same-day travel only

Escape the riff-raff in the ferry’s private lounge, bar and deck. Includes free drinks, tiny food and inflated egos.

The Posh Pit is at the pointy end of the boat (separate to standard). If you are travelling with children, you will need to book them into the Posh Pit too.

Parking is free, but there’s not much of it. Allow twenty minutes. Accessible parking is available; head up the driveway and turn left. Look for the signs.

The northern suburbs (that’s where Mona is) are connected to Hobart via the intercity cycleway.

Public transport

Metro bus numbers 510, 520, 522 and X20 pass Mona. Prices vary.

We’re following advice from state and federal health authorities about how to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

  • All visitors must check in with the Check in TAS app;
  • Physical distancing controls;
  • Distinct service times in our restaurants, so we can manage capacity;

The O is a device that provides information about the artworks on display, and performs a suite of other functions and services, too. Usually O devices are distributed to visitors upon entry but we can’t do this at the moment, for obvious, pandemic-themed reasons. Please download the app to your iPhone (available for Android mid-December), and bring your own headphones, too.

The O supports VoiceOver and screen reader functionality for people who are blind, have low vision, or are dyslexic.

Most of Mona is accessible, but unfortunately the Pausiris chamber, certain artworks (Unseen Seen, The Divine Comedy) and parts of the Round House are not. If you have difficulties walking long distances, we recommend bringing a wheelchair or mobility scooter. Or if you would like to borrow a wheelchair from Mona, see staff at the museum entrance. Please note that wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance.

If arriving by ferry, you’ll disembark at the bottom of the 99 stairs that lead up to the museum entrance. The jetty isn’t wheelchair or pram accessible at the moment—we apologise for this and assure you we’re working on it; we’ve begun work on an alternate museum entrance, in consultation with Morris Goding Access Consulting. We also have a wheelchair-accessible bus.

If driving to Mona, you will find accessible parking at the top of the driveway; turn left and look for the signs.

Accessible toilets and baby change facilities can be found throughout Mona. Ask staff for directions when you get here, or check your O device.

School Groups

School groups are very welcome at Mona but please book at least 14 days ahead of time. To book, we require one teacher per every ten students for contact tracing.

Due to the pandemic, we won’t be handing out O devices; download the O app to your iPhone or Android device. We’ll also provide you with resources to help plan your visit.

We're turning one of our function spaces into a temporary vaccination clinic on Monday 18 October and then a follow-up for the second dose on Monday 8 November. You can book through the Department of Health Coronavirus website, or by calling 1800 671 738. If you want to be vaccinated at Mona just choose the Berriedale pop-up clinic when you're given the option or let the person on the phone know. If we run out of spaces, there are plenty of community clinics in the northern suburbs where you can get vaccinated as well.
