Visiting Mona

Opening hours

We've got a whole page for them here.

Should I book in advance?

We recommend booking ahead so you don't have to queue (or miss out, as there are limited timed entry slots). Book here.

How long should I allow to visit Mona?

You could probably speed through everything in three or four hours, but we recommend you hang around—make a day of it.

Is Mona suitable for children?

Art can sometimes be confronting. Download the O for warnings during your visit.

Is there anything else to do, besides the museum?

Yep. Heaps. Check out our stuff to do page.

Parking is limited, book the ferry. Also, don't bring your boat / caravan as we don't have room.

Is Mona accessible?

Mona is mostly accessible, with some limitations. Check out the accessibility page for information, maps, the works.

Do I need to catch the ferry? Is it worth it?

Yes—parking is limited, so we recommend it. Approaching the museum by water is also built into David's design for the place. Book the ferry here.

Do you have a visitor guide?

We do, it's called the O. We highly recommend you download it before you visit, it's very helpful.

What food and drink options are available on site?

We've got several restaurants, bars, and a heavy metal outdoor kitchen on site. See them here.

Can I BYO food or booze?

Nope, sorry. Leave that four-pack of Cruisers at home.

Do you accept cash?

Nope. Mona is cashless.

Lost property

If you lose something, see staff at the museum information desk, or email

First aid

If you need first aid anywhere on site or in the museum, talk to the nearest staff member.

Please cloak all large items and umbrellas.

Phone charging stations

There are several charging locations around Mona, including the box office on the tennis court and information desk inside the museum (hand in your device to get charged, get a tag for it and collect it later). There are also charging lockers in the Ether building. All charging options are free.

Parent and carer room

We have a quiet, private space for parents on level B3 of the museum. Speak to gallery staff for access.

Baby changing facilities

Change tables are located in most accessible toilets on site. If you're in the museum: next to the museum entrance; and on B3, next to the Void Bar (close to the main lift); and in the Round House. Outside the museum: in the Moorilla Wine Bar and Ether Building. Ask staff for directions.

Strobe lights

Strobe lighting and loud audio operate in some galleries. Use the map on the O to avoid these parts of the museum or speak with staff about which artworks to avoid.

The museum is mostly underground. Be aware if you don't like confined spaces and low lighting. Speak to staff if you need assistance.

Can I take pictures in the museum?

Yes. Just no tripods, flashes, or professional photography. Tag us with #monamuseum and @monamuseum.

Outside only. Consider other guests, and please use the ashtrays provided.

Service animals are welcome. Other animals are not allowed anywhere at Mona or on the grounds, for a lot of very good reasons.

What Tasmanian ID do I need?

We accept photo ID with a Tasmanian address. If you don't have that, a Tassie utility bill with photo ID. Contact Bookings & Enquiries if you have any other questions.

What concession cards do you accept?

Valid seniors, health care and student cards. If you're not sure about your eligibility, contact Bookings & Enquiries.

What is the booking fee?

Can I change my booking date?

Yes, subject to availability. Contact our Bookings & Enquiries team on +61 (3) 6277 9968 or ahead of time.

Do I have to arrive right on time?

Your timed entry ticket grants you entry within the hour marked on it. If you're unsure when you'll be arriving, grab a wildcard ticket.

What's a wildcard ticket?

A wildcard ticket has no allocated entry time. Just show up when you like and join the queue to get in.

Can I change my ferry times?

Departures can be changed up to 15 minutes before the ferry leaves (subject to capacity). See staff at Brooke Street Pier or the Mona box office, or call Bookings & Enquiries on +61 (3) 6277 9978.
